Becoming

Life is about the journey, it is not about "being, but becoming."

becoming…adj. fit, suitable, congruous, proper, graceful, belonging to the character or adapted to circumstances…

"This life, therefore, is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness; not health, but healing; not being, but becoming; not rest, but exercise. We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it. The process is not yet finished, but it is going on. This is not the end, but it is the road. All does not yet gleam in glory, but all is being purified."--- Martin Luther, *Defense of All the Articles*, Lazareth transl., as found in Grace Brame, *Receptive Prayer* (Chalice Press, 1985) p.119(Thank you Bella Art Girl for the quote!)

Preparing For Lent

Lent begins this coming Wednesday. Last year I posted a little about Lent, so I won't repeat what I wrote there. This year I am still observing Lent, but in a slightly different way. My focus is going to be on the topic of grace. (Click on the link to read more about the one little word idea; my word is grace.)

I am going to be focusing on the grace of Christ in my own life, living a grace-filled life and extending grace to others. I already have a collage/art project underway. I am looking forward to observing this season in some unique ways, such as doing an art project and incorporating that into my observance of this season.

For more on Lent and observing Lent, I recommend the book Treasuring God in Our Traditions by Noel Piper. Mrs. Piper does an excellent job of sharing simple, yet deeply meaningful ways of observing a variety of holidays and special occasions. If you have one book on traditions and celebrations, this should be it. It is short, easy to read and packed with do-able ideas.

Here is a link to some ways to observe the lenten season or holy week, again this is by Noel Piper, as well as this blog post. We have not incorporated many of these ideas, but hope to include a few more of them as the years go by. One thing we do as an entire family is to play Easter-focused music during this season. Our one CD is Passion Hymns for a Kid's Heart.

I would enjoy hearing about your observance of this season or your thoughts on Lent. Post a comment about it or post a comment linking to your blog if you post about it on your own blog.

Thank you for posting these links. Last year I was hoping to do some Lent activities but I wasn't coordinated enough. I love the readings set up by Noel Piper. I hope we can use them!

I am glad that those links are helpful.

I find that, with holidays and such, if I do one little thing (such as listening to our CD of music-that is easy enough), and then each year add another little thing. My hope is that over the years we will make progress and establish traditions.

Sometimes it can feel too big to take on a major observance of some holiday, but I do want to move our family along in a direction that sees Christ in our celebrations, as opposed to just another holiday.

I appreciate Noel Piper's suggestion to either do the readings throughout Lent or condense them and do them just during Holy Week-if the 40 days of Lent are too long for little ones. I appreciate options at this season in my life!
